MCA Small Commercial Vessel Certification
Compliance with the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Code of Practice for small commercial vessels.
1. Regulatory Framework
All UK vessels in commercial use, up to 24 metres load line length, which go to sea and carry no more than 12 passengers and/or cargo, must comply with the MCA Small Commercial Vessel and Pilot Boat Code of Practice.
Compliance is mandatory and verified through Certificates of Compliance issued by an authorised Certifying Authority.
2. Vessels Covered by the Code
The MCA Code applies to the following types of commercial vessels:
- Sailing charter vessels (skippered and bareboat)
- Motor charter vessels, including angling and dive boats
- Motor vessels carrying up to 12 passengers
- Commercial RIBs
- Workboats
- Pilot boats
3. Survey & Inspection Requirements
Prior to certification, each vessel must undergo a comprehensive technical assessment, including:
- Full out-of-water condition survey
- Inspection of safety equipment
- Verification of lifesaving appliances
- Stability assessment
- Structural and systems evaluation
Only upon successful completion of these inspections may a Certificate be issued.
